FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions:
What grit do I sand to before applying Willie's Wood Finish?
Answer: Any grit you want! The higher the grit the higher the sheen! Our only recommendation is that any time you sand higher than 220 let the finish sit a bit longer to allow for better penetration into the wood.
How long should I let the finish sit before buffing it off?
Answer: General rule of thumb is 30 minutes. Some projects may be fine with less time and some may require more. We always recommend more if you sand above 220 grit to allow more time for penetration.
Can Willie's Wood Finish be used on more than just wood?
Answer: Absolutely! Willie's Wood Finish is Tung Oil based and can be used on all sorts of materials including; wood, concrete, vinyl, slate, leather, rubber, and more!
Is Willie's Wood Finish food safe?
Answer: It is food contact safe once it fully cures. All the ingredients that make up Willie's Wood Finish are 100% natural and safe, but like with anything it is better to be safe than sorry. If used on a cutting board give at least a week before food contact to allow the finish to fully cure.
Can I top a top coat over Willie's Wood Finish?
Answer: We do not recommend with the exception of a ceramic top coat. Even with a ceramic we recommend that Willie's Wood Finish cures fully before applying the ceramic top coat. Our finish has several waxes in it and while they will cure, they will also fill the wood pores and leave a silky smooth finish. A urethane-type top coat would have issues adhering to the wood.
Why does my new jar of finish look used?
That is because you received a jar that was randomly selected for a QA test. We periodically check jars of finish before putting our seal on them to ensure it is of the highest quality and up to our standards. We check them by stirring them with a popsicle stick that way we can ensure it is the correct thickness and consistency.
